How we work

An algorithm is not finished until it runs at rate

A result that only holds in double precision on a workstation is a hypothesis, not a deliverable. Our process closes the gap deliberately, at a point where changing course is still cheap.

  • Agree what success means numerically before writing any processing.
  • Prototype in floating point to establish the approach works at all.
  • Fix word lengths, produce a bit-exact model, and quantify the accuracy cost.
  • Generate test data, including awkward cases, and build the visualisation to judge it.
  • Implement on the target platform and verify against the bit-exact reference.
  • Profile and optimise until it meets rate with margin, not just on a good run.

Common questions

Signal processing questions we are asked most

Can you implement an algorithm we already have?

Yes. A common engagement is taking a customer's floating-point algorithm and producing a bit-exact model plus a target implementation, with an accuracy analysis showing exactly what the conversion cost.

Do you work on ultrasound signal processing specifically?

Yes — diagnostic ultrasound is where A&W spends most of its time. That includes B-mode and M-mode, colour, power and spectral Doppler, speckle reduction and harmonic imaging.

Which platforms do you target?

Embedded processors, FPGA fabric and GPU. Choosing between them is usually part of the work, decided on latency, power and data rate rather than preference.
